One Day in LA is a Masters dissertation that approaches Los Angeles and its collective and individual imaginaries through a personal journey to some of the different ways of life which take place in the multiplicity of architectures, domestic devices, and acquisitions of this provisional metropolis built, for generations, with their inhabitants’ dreams.

This assertive and experimental research focuses on the work methodology (combining cinematographic methods with the architectural ones), the objectual ouylook (seeking the diversity of shapes and materials which allow an approach to the different ways of life), and the audiovisual perspective (mixing the architectural object with the political condition of the characters through the camera perspective).

The research establishes a direct connection between the architect role and the world of film facets (director, screenwriter, artistic director). It is a work, thus, which uses cinema to investigate the production, at a process of essay and error of a script and settings in constant mutation. It is, then, a process of sequential changes to make surge through the double perspective of films and architecture a critical stance against the cultural reality of this Masters’s dissertation.

The work bases on ideas from some texts, such as The Architecture of Four Ecologies by Reyner Banham, City of Quartz by Mike Davis, The Infrastructural City by Kazys Varnelis, Reinventing Los Angeles by Robert Gottlieb, The Provisional City by Dana Cuff, and Bohemian Bridges by Ted Wells. Despite the fact that these texts contain very varied and, sometimes, contradictory ideas of Los Angeles, they help to understand the historical episodes, lifestyle, and architectures of this complex metropolis. Moreover, there are cinematographical materials that allow a wider view of the ways of life and concerns of the inhabitants of this city. The information obtained from these sources is the base to reconfigure a personal imaginary – a personal approach to the city from distance – built with the intention to establish a dialogue with the social, political, and cultural sphere of this heterogeneous society as well as with its architecture and territory.

The settings enclose infrastructures, ‘public’ spaces, industrial and commercial architectures, and domestic spaces – interior and exterior. They approach spectators to a questioned reality and call into crisis the daily life of this city. Although the high stratification and social compartmentation of this metropolis, exemplified by its communities, Los Angeles is a complex organism that acts through permeability and friction of the changing urban dynamics. This work, thus, shows the permeability of spaces that evolve by acquiring new cultural and political connotations.

Therefore, this project is a compilation of cinematographic materials (script, storyboard, images), objectual models (material settings), and a short film (with different chapters) which help to understand this author viewpoint of a city she has never visited but she has imagined and built from her dreams.

One Day in LA es un Trabajo Final de Máster que se acerca a Los Ángeles y sus imaginarios, individuales y colectivos, a través de un personal recorrido por algunos de los diferentes modos de vida que tienen lugar entre la multiplicidad de arquitecturas, dispositivos domésticos y agenciamientos de esta metrópolis provisional construida, desde hace generaciones, con los sueños de sus habitantes.

Es una investigación propositiva y experimental desde el punto de vista de la metodología de trabajo (combinando métodos cinematográficos con los propios de la disciplina arquitectónica), desde lo objetual (buscando diversas formas y materiales que permitan un acercamiento a los diferentes modos de vida) y desde lo audiovisual (mezclando el objeto arquitectónico con la condición política de los personajes, a través de la perspectiva que permite la cámara).

En esta investigación se establece una conexión directa entre el papel del arquitecto y las facetas propias del mundo del cine, como por ejemplo la de director, guionista, director artístico y de montaje. Es un proyecto, por tanto, que utiliza el medio del cine para investigar sobre la producción, en un proceso de ensayo y error, de un guión y unos escenarios en constante mutación. Se trata, por tanto, de un proceso de sucesivos reajustes que pretende hacer emerger, a través de la doble perspectiva que ofrecen la arquitectura y el cine, un posicionamiento crítico frente a la realidad cultural que se aborda en este TFM.

El proyecto se apoya en ideas extraídas de algunos textos como La arquitectura de las cuatro ecologías de Reyner Banham, Ciudad de cuarzo de Mike Davis, The Infrastructural City de Kazys Varnelis, Reinventing Los Angeles de Robert Gottlieb, The Provisional City de Dana Cuff y Bohemian Bridges de Ted Wells; textos que contienen ideas muy diversas y en ocasiones contrarias de la ciudad de Los Ángeles, pero que permiten entender los episodios históricos, las maneras de habitar y las arquitecturas de esta compleja metrópolis. Además, hay un apoyo directo en material fílmico, lo que permite obtener una visión más amplia sobre los modos de vida y las inquietudes de los residentes de esta ciudad. La información que se extrae de estas fuentes es la base para reconfigurar un imaginario propio – o una personal aproximación a la ciudad desde la distancia – que se construye con la intención de establecer un diálogo con lo social, lo político y lo cultural, de esta sociedad tan heterogénea, así como con la arquitectura y el territorio.

Los escenarios que se construyen y se filman engloban infraestructuras, espacios «públicos», arquitecturas industriales y comerciales, y espacios de uso doméstico – tanto exteriores como interiores -; que acercan al espectador a una realidad que se cuestiona y pone en crisis el propio día a día de esta ciudad. La idea que se pretende poner en valor es que, más allá de la fuerte estratificación y compartimentación social de esta metrópolis, representada en cada una de sus comunidades, Los Ángeles es un organismo complejo que opera, sin embargo, a través de la permeabilidad que se produce entre estos estratos, una fricción que retroalimenta unas dinámicas urbanas en constante transformación. Mostrando con este trabajo esta permeabilidad de los espacios, que se nutren y evolucionana, adquiriendo nuevas connotaciones culturales y políticas.

El proyecto, por tanto, es una combinación de materiales fílmicos con los que se ha experimentado (guión, storyboard, pruebas de imagen), modelos objetuales (escenarios materiales) y un corto cinematográfico (con diferentes capítulos), que ayudan a entender el posicionamiento de esta autora respecto a una ciudad que nunca ha visitado pero que, como sus habitantes, imagina y construye en su propio sueño.
